The Invaders Are Here: Bon Appetit!

A blogging friend made me aware of this article in the New York Times about eating invasive species such as feral pigs. Feral pigs are a problem here in Texas and it makes perfect sense to eat them. They’re free-ranging, organic, with no added hormones or antibiotics. So eat them invaders, y’all!

Gruene Market Days

Yesterday T and I went to the Market Days in Gruene, south of Austin and pronounced as ‘Green”. The weather was mild and the market was colorful.

Five Things I Can’t Stand

I’ve been feeling kind of truculent lately, so let’s see if a list of five things I can’t stand will get it out of my system.

Let me begin with drivers behind me–when I’m up front at a stoplight, waiting to turn left at an unprotected left turn–honking for me to go ahead and make the turn already.

My Favorite American Store

A week or so ago, one of my favorite bloggers posted about the clothes in her wardrobe. She has since taken the post down, so I can’t link to it. But it reminded me of one of my favorite things here in America.

About once year I need some serious clothes shopping. Usually because I have gotten even fatter have given myself a size promotion.

In general service in America is much better than in the Netherlands. But there is one aspect of telephone service that really gets me.

Ten American Foods I will Never Eat (Again)

1.  Chicken-fried steak with gravy: ground, fried beef that is kind of grayish, with gravy that is also grayish.

2. Donuts: fried cake rings.

3. Pork rinds: fried pork fat, eaten as chips.

When I was young in the Netherlands, we lived in an old farmhouse in Eemnes, and by old I mean from 1607.

Lethal Weapon Free

In this economy, businesses have to be extra creative. And are they ever! For example, if you go to the RadioShack in Hamilton, Montana, to sign up for Dish Network right now, you get a free gun or pizza. Isn’t choice wonderful?

Apparently having good company for your birthday is not enough when you go out to eat. In many restaurants the personnel sings a song for the celebrant. And everyone in the restaurant will know about it. The waiters meet near the kitchen and start clapping as they walk to the birthday person’s table.
